Nothing is a reject. Even your worst painting can become one of your favorites.

In this mixed media demo, I use a simple collage border to interrupt a painting I’d written off and give it a new beginning. It’s quick, it’s forgiving, and it changes how you look at the whole piece.

Why a collage border works

I’m not trying to fix the painting. I’m adding just enough collage to interrupt what was already there. That shifts you from fixing to exploring, and it takes the pressure off. No rules, no expectations, just reacting and seeing what happens.

How to add a collage border

  1. Pick papers that contrast with your painting (I used teal patterned paper around the sides and pink and red papers along the top and bottom).
  2. Tear or cut strips and lay them around the edges before gluing.
  3. Glue them down (Mod Podge), overlapping the edges of the painting.
  4. Step back, then paint or draw back into the piece to tie it together.

Don’t wait for a beautiful result

Most artists sit down expecting to create something beautiful right now, and that mindset locks you up. You only do what you already know, and even that starts to feel tight.

Finished art isn’t where your growth happens. It’s the result of everything you’ve explored before it.

Use the brush you’ve never used

If you have a brush you’ve never touched, a tool, a texture, or any idea, follow it. That’s being creative. I’d rather fail exploring than make something safe and forgettable.
