My Journey Creating Abstract Presidential Portraits

Portraits terrified me. I had painted landscapes, still lifes, many subjects — but I always avoided portraits because they seemed impossibly difficult. Then I discovered something that changed everything: the elaborate costumes and formal attire of our founding fathers and early presidents.

There was something about Washington's military regalia, Jefferson's refined 18th-century dress, and Lincoln's iconic formal wear that immediately attracted me. These weren't just faces to paint — they were characters wrapped in the visual language of their eras.

Creating Loose USA President Portraits

But after trying for a while, I hit a wall. I realized I needed to step back and learn to draw the human head properly first. Many months were spent studying facial structure, proportions, and the fundamentals of portrait drawing. Only after understanding those basics could I return to painting with the confidence to push into expressive interpretation.

Loose presidential portraits follow no predictable formulas — bold brushstrokes, unexpected color choices, and compositions that prioritize emotion over exactitude. This collection represents that journey from portrait fear to artistic freedom, capturing iconic American figures through expressive contemporary art techniques.

The Artistic Challenge of Expressive Presidential Art

Creating loose portraits of instantly recognizable figures presents a unique creative puzzle. How do you capture Washington's essence without relying solely on his powdered wig? How do you convey Lincoln's presence through color and gestural brushwork rather than his distinctive silhouette?

This collection represents months of experimentation, pushing beyond photographic representation to find the artistic soul of American political imagery. Each piece balances recognizable presidential features with bold contemporary painting techniques.

My Creative Process for Loose Presidential Paintings

Each piece begins not with historical research, but with color studies and gestural sketches. I'm not trying to document — I'm trying to interpret through expressive brushwork and modern artistic sensibilities.

The Washington pieces emerged through bold, foundational brushstrokes in earthy ochres and deep blues. The paint application itself became part of the message, with confident, decisive marks that build layers of meaning and presidential character.

For the Lincoln works, I found myself drawn to mixed media techniques that allowed for both construction and destruction within the same piece. Torn paper elements, scraping techniques, and layered paint create surfaces that feel weathered by time and struggle. The somber palette occasionally breaks into surprising moments of warmth — artistic choices that felt right in the moment of creation.

I release new sports and portrait artwork once in a while — shop the collection or reach out if you're interested in a commission.
