How the Deconstruction Lab works

The Deconstruction Lab teaches you to construct a subject from simple forms, then take it apart on purpose. When you understand how things connect, your loose work looks believable instead of accidental.

Then you add time. Draw it in four minutes, then two, then one, then thirty seconds, until it falls apart. That's a progression, and it's where your own style starts to show up.

Seven courses, one path.

What's inside

  • Learn drawing. Beginner course with easy to follow videos.

    1. Drawing Fundamentals

    Structure is the permission slip.
Can't draw yet? Start here. You'll learn to see perspective and build objects from basic forms. Already draw well? Skip to course 2.

  • Learn to loosen up. Draw and paint loose course.

    2. Drawing Is Everything

You don't have a drawing problem. You have a thinking problem.
The heart of the system. Construct first, then loosen it. You'll also try new grips, techniques, and materials, and run your first progressions.

  • Learn how to design and compose paintings from the vey beginning.

    3. Design & Composition

Most painting problems aren't paint problems. They're composition decisions you never made.
My take on design: the alternative to the rule of thirds, common mistakes, how to simplify, and which tangents to avoid.

  • Learn how to simplify value and colors.

    4. Value & Color

Most painting problems aren't color problems. They're value problems.
Get the values right and the painting has a chance. Skip color matching and pick a lane instead: chromatic (colorful and harmonious) or tonal (muted with a pop of accent).

  • Learn to paint loose watercolors

    5. Watercolor Progressions

Watercolor isn't fragile. This course proves it.
Run the system through watercolor and learn how it behaves, so you can go loose without losing the structure underneath.

  • Learn to paint loose with acrylics

    6. Acrylic Progressions

This is not about finished paintings. It teaches you how to think with paint.
Run the same system through acrylic: layering, brushwork, and what makes it different from watercolor.

  • Learn mixed media painting techniques

    7. Mixed Media

The most open, most spontaneous course in the Deconstruction Lab.
Mix and mingle materials to get the ball rolling and see what happens.
