Painterly Collage and Acrylic Still Life Techniques
Turn old sketches into vibrant art with this mixed media flower painting tutorial. See how acrylics, collage, and simple design choices create a lively floral still life.
I love when a “reject drawing” gets a second life. In this demo, I used an old sketch as the base for a white vase, letting its smudges and texture become part of the finished still life. A bit of glue, a few scraps of paper, and suddenly the piece turns into something new and painterly.
Once the collage base was down, I built the design with cobalt blue, soft greens, and quick daisy shapes. Working fast keeps the brushwork loose and spontaneous, while subtle changes in value stop the background from feeling flat.
The charm of this process comes from embracing imperfection—the wrinkles, leftover marks, and layered texture all add character. Acrylics make it easy because they dry fast and handle opaque layers beautifully.
This piece proves that a painterly collage doesn’t need precision to shine—just curiosity, confidence, and the willingness to turn old sketches into something expressive and new.

Final Thoughts
This method turns forgotten art into fresh compositions while celebrating texture, layering, and color harmony. The irregular collage base brings a sense of history, while the acrylic layers add new energy — a perfect mix for expressive mixed media floral paintings.
