Painterly Flower Painting with Acrylic and Collage
Explore the world of abstract art and mixed media, creating an abstract flower painting with acrylic and collage. Video included, Let’s go!
In this painterly flower painting tutorial, I started with a refillable acrylic marker loaded with ink. It’s a fun way to sketch loose, flowing outlines—almost like a coloring book. Don’t worry about perfect shapes; the goal is to keep the energy alive from the first line.
Once the main forms were in place, I blocked in color using Alizarin Crimson for the background and lighter pinks for the flowers. I left bits of white showing through the edges to create rhythm and separation between shapes.
As the piece developed, I shifted greens and yellows in the leaves to avoid monotony, letting the brushstrokes overlap freely. The bone black vase gave balance to the bright colors while keeping the design minimal and modern.
This process is perfect for beginners—it’s not about precision, but about layering color and shape in a way that feels spontaneous and painterly. Each mark adds character, and every imperfection makes the painting more alive.
