¸Easy Mixed Media Fish Painting Using Recycled Artwork

Don't throw away those ugly drawings and failed paintings just yet! They might be the perfect starting point for your next mixed media masterpiece.

In this lesson, I'm turning old head sketches into five funky fish using ink, acrylic paint, collage, and a little creative freedom.

Turning Old Art Into Something New

I started with discarded drawings, adding loose ink marks, splatters, and bold black shapes. Once dry, I cut out five fish bodies, giving each one a slightly different personality.

For the background, I used yellow ochre, raw umber, and acrylic paint, creating texture with an old rag, watermarks, and scratches.

Then came the fun part: arranging the fish, gluing everything down, and adding simple eyes and fins.

The beauty of this approach? Nothing needs to be perfect. The old drawings provide unexpected patterns, and the loose shapes keep everything playful.

The takeaway: Your failed artwork isn't necessarily trash. Sometimes it's just waiting for a new assignment.
