Painting a busy city doesn’t mean painting every window, car, and street sign. The more you simplify, the more expressive your painting gets.

What you’ll need: acrylic paints, collage paper scraps, glue, a few brushes, a board or paper to paint on
Start With Design, Not Details
Before painting, I sketched out the basic composition and reduced the cars, buildings, figures, and street elements to a handful of key shapes. That little bit of planning gives me freedom once I start painting. I know where things go, but I’m not copying every detail.

Mix Collage With Expressive Acrylic
I blocked in the red car first, then added violets, blues, and neutrals for the street. Then came collage paper for building shapes, architectural edges, and even part of the car. I let the paper’s existing marks and textures show through instead of covering them up.
Once the layers dried, I came back with darker shadows, lighter accents, and a few structural details.
Keep It Loose but Believable
The final stage was all about relationships, not perfection. I strengthened shadows, suggested pedestrians and traffic lights, and enlarged the figures when they felt too small for the scene.
The takeaway: loose painting doesn’t mean no structure. A little planning and strong shapes let you paint freely without losing control.
