How to Draw Loose: A 2-Step Construct & Deconstruct Exercise

Learn how to draw loose with a simple two-step exercise. Draw the same cup tight in 2.5 minutes, then loose in 30 seconds, and see why it changes your painting.

Side-by-side pencil drawings of a cup and saucer, a careful contour drawing on the left and a loose, fast gesture drawing on the right.

Do your drawings and paintings feel stiff? It usually starts with how you draw.

In this loose drawing exercise, I draw the same cup and saucer twice: once carefully, once loose. The difference between the two is the biggest shift I teach.

Step 1: Construct (about 2.5 minutes)

This is the construct phase. I take my time, build the shapes, and try to get everything right. Nothing is wrong with this. You’re learning structure, proportion, and how things fit together.

But if this is where you stop, your work will almost always feel stiff and tight.

Step 2: Deconstruct (about 30 seconds)

Same subject, completely different mindset. I’m not trying to control it anymore. I’m only trying to capture the essence of the subject.

  • Loosen your grip
  • Make faster marks
  • Go outside the lines
  • If something feels off, come back over it and correct it
  • If you’re painting, you can always negative space paint around it

The imperfections are part of the process. You have to be okay with that.

Why this matters for painting

This is the shift most artists miss: draw tight and you’ll paint tight. Draw loose and you have a better chance of painting loose.

If your paintings feel stiff, see why your watercolors look stiff for more on how tight drawings cause it.

Try it yourself

Pick a simple object like a cup. Draw it carefully for a couple of minutes, then draw it again in 30 seconds with a looser grip and faster marks. Put them side by side.

You need both. The first teaches you structure. The second teaches you freedom.

Learn Structure. Paint Loose.

Construct. Deconstruct. Explore. Repeat.

How to draw loose FAQ

How do I make my drawing looser?
Loosen your grip, work faster, and aim for the essence of the subject instead of exact details. Timed drawings help a lot.

Do I need to learn tight drawing first?
Learning structure and proportion is important. The goal isn’t to skip it, it’s to not stop there.

Does loose drawing make loose painting easier?
Yes. If you draw tight, you tend to paint tight. A loose drawing habit carries into your painting.

What should I do if a loose drawing feels off?
Come back over it and correct it, or if you’re painting, use negative space around it.
