Eye Drawing Assignment – Practice Eye Structure hero image

It’s your turn to put these eye construction ideas to the test. In this lesson, you’ll draw from a series of short timed poses—each about four minutes long—to practice structure, form, and proportion without worrying about a perfect finish.

This lesson is part of the Head Drawing Course.

Assignment Overview

In this timed exercise, focus on how the eyeball fits inside the eye socket, the spacing beneath the brow ridge, and the protective donut form that wraps around the eyes.

Each pose lasts about four minutes, so you’ll have to work quickly and stay loose. Don’t stress about details—this is all about structure and accuracy, not pretty drawings.

If you can’t finish both eyes in the time limit, that’s completely fine. You can pause the video if you’d like to complete your study before moving on.

When you hear the short notification sound near the end, use those final 20 seconds to tighten up your main construction lines and check proportions one last time.

Tips for Better Results

  • Begin each study by mapping the brow ridge and socket planes.
  • Visualize the sphere of the eye sitting back into the skull.
  • Draw the protective donut form lightly before adding lids.
  • Keep your marks confident and rhythmic—avoid tiny corrections.
  • Focus on gesture and structure, not rendering.

The Goal

By the end of this exercise, you’ll have a stronger grasp of how to:

  • Position the eyes accurately in perspective.
  • Keep forms consistent across different head angles.
  • Suggest believable depth with minimal linework.
