Collage & Acrylic Still Life Painting with flowers in white vase

Got a pile of old sketches, failed drawings, or paintings that never worked? Don’t toss them! Those rejects might be the best art supplies you own.

In this mixed media tutorial, I turn a smudgy old drawing into a loose floral still life using collage, acrylic paint, and relaxed brushwork. Watch the full step-by-step video here:

Rescue Your Old Drawings

I started with a piece of drawing paper covered in smudges and random marks. Instead of hiding them, I used them to build a blue-and-white vase. A few simple floral patterns, some glue, and that old paper became part of a brand new composition.

No fancy cutting needed. I glued the rough paper shapes right onto the surface and let the wrinkles, edges, and old marks add character.

Paint Loose, Not Perfect

Next came a dark blue tabletop, a soft green background, and loose white daisies. I used simple brush marks instead of carefully drawn petals, and varied the greens to add depth without getting fussy.

Tip: keep your flowers slightly off-center. It adds movement and keeps the arrangement from feeling stiff.

Let the Layers Do the Work

To finish, I added darker greens, brighter whites, and a few warm yellow centers. Those last touches pull the flowers forward while letting some of the original drawing peek through.

The takeaway: don’t judge your art too early. A failed drawing can become a cool collage element, and a painting that looks flat halfway through might just need another layer or two.
