No sketch, no second chances, no hand guides. How many clean watercolor lines can you paint?

This watercolor line exercise looks easy, and that’s the trap. It’s a simple way to build brush control, and you’ll feel how hard it is the moment you try it.

### What you need

- 140 lb cold press watercolor paper
- A pencil and ruler to mark off a 6 x 9 in area
- A sword brush (any brush with a nice point works)
- Watercolor in a few colors

### The rules

1. Mark off a 6 x 9 in area. No other guides.
2. Paint horizontal lines with a sword brush.
3. Keep the paint nice and watery. **Think tea, not milk.**
4. Each line must be **one continuous stroke**. No breaks, no touching other lines, no waffling.

Every break or touching line counts as a mistake. Count them at the end.

### My results

I started rough: a break in the very first line, then two lines touching at the end. Two lines, two mistakes.

As I kept going, things settled down. My hand got steadier, and a few of the strokes were some of my cleanest and most confident. I finished with **26 lines and 7 mistakes**, with a few breaks, a few touches, and some wobble. I’d give myself an A-minus, or a B+ if you’re stingy.

### A tip that helped

I started thinking of it like drawing. Painting really is drawing, just with a brush and color instead of pencil and lead. If you want to build that habit, try my [construct and deconstruct drawing exercise](https://craftedbyrobert.com/how-to-draw-loose-construct-deconstruct/).

### Watercolor line exercise FAQ

**What is a good watercolor exercise for brush control?**
Painting long, continuous lines with no sketch or guides. It trains a steady hand and confident strokes.

**What brush should I use for painting lines?**
A sword brush, which has a long, pointed shape. Any brush with a nice point will work.

**How watery should the paint be?**
Think tea, not milk. Watery paint flows smoothly and helps you pull a clean stroke.

**Does this make my painting looser?**
It builds control and confidence, so your marks get more deliberate. That helps both tight and loose work.
