Original Coastal Maine Paintings
Explore original coastal Maine paintings by Robert Joyner, inspired by Stonington, working harbors, lobster boats, and rugged shorelines. Loose, expressive coastal art.
There's something about Maine that sticks with you, bro.
I've visited three times — twice with my wife and once with my daughter. Even though it's been about a decade since my last trip, those memories still find their way into my paintings.
Especially Stonington, Maine.

Stonington — My Kind of Place
Stonington isn't some polished tourist destination. It's a working fishing village with weathered lobster boats, old buildings, rugged shorelines, and plenty of character.
Exactly the kind of stuff I love to paint.
Forget perfectly manicured waterfronts. Give me a beat-up lobster boat, some crooked docks, and a few interesting shapes to work with.
That's painting gold, bro.

Painting the Maine Coast Loose
My coastal Maine paintings are inspired by working harbors, fishing boats, rocky shorelines, and the changing atmosphere along the water.
I use acrylics, watercolor, and mixed media, focusing on bold shapes, expressive brushwork, and unexpected colors.
I'm not trying to reproduce every little detail. I want to capture the feeling of the place.
Sometimes a few loose marks say more than a hundred carefully painted windows and ropes.

Keep it loose, bro. The boats don't have to be perfect to float!
