Layered mixed media piece with graphite, crayon resist, and torn collage paper

You’ve been throwing away your best starting points.

Learn how watercolor, acrylic, graphite, charcoal, crayon, and ink behave and mix. Then use them to turn rejects and old sketches into the start of something new.

This is a starter course: how I approach mixed media, ideas for exploring it, and demos that put it all to work.

What you’ll practice

  • How each medium behaves on different surfaces
  • Layering so the drawing still shows through the paint
  • Working without a fixed sequence: start anywhere and respond to the surface
  • Transparency and opacity as design decisions
  • Resist: crayon or oil pastel under a wash
  • Building on an old reject instead of tossing it
  • Making raw material on purpose and turning it into collage
  • Making your own collage paper from scraps

How it works: 24 lessons in 5 modules, 100+ minutes, 5 assignments, with final demos.

Best taken after: any of the core courses. You don’t need to be equally skilled in every medium.
