Yellow can be a tricky color. Push it too far, and it overwhelms everything. But when you balance it with the right colors and values, it can bring incredible energy to a painting.

In this loose acrylic still life demonstration, I'm putting yellow front and center with a simple tabletop arrangement of cups, dishes, a bottle, and chairs.

## Making Yellow Work in Acrylic Painting

The trick isn't just using bright yellow. It's knowing what to put around it.

I started with a simple composition, then blocked in the table using Hansa yellow, diarylide yellow, and touches of yellow ochre. Rather than jumping straight to maximum saturation, I kept the initial colors slightly muted.

That gave me room to push the brighter yellows later.

Cool blues, grays, and deep burgundy tones helped balance the composition. I also allowed some white surface to show through, keeping the brushwork broken and expressive.

As the painting developed, I adjusted shapes, strengthened shadows, and added just enough detail to suggest the objects without getting fussy.

**The takeaway:** Bold color needs contrast. You don't have to make every color intense to create an exciting painting. Give your star some supporting actors!
