Messed up your painting? In collage, you don’t have to start over. You just grab new paper.

In this mixed media collage tutorial, I paint two lemons, add some strawberries, and show how I fix mistakes along the way by swapping in fresh pieces.

### Start with simple shapes

I begin with scrap paper, crayon, and yellow acrylic. Painting without white lets the layers underneath show through. Two big lemons can be boring, but built this way they get a visual dynamic that’s hard to get from plain white paper.

I glue the lemons onto 140 lb cold press paper. Then I calm down the background so the lemons don’t get lost in the chaos behind them.

### Know when to stop (and when you blew it)

This is the tricky part of my style: knowing when to stop. I added lemon wedges and tried to blend them into the lemons, and it didn’t work.

In painting, that can mean hours of repair. In collage, you wipe it off and get a fresh start.

### The fix: reach for new collage paper

By fresh start, I mean reaching into the drawer for another piece of collage paper or an old drawing. I mixed it up with color and chose strawberries, a quick decision.

When I started to glue the piece down, I liked the back better than the front I’d painted. The white space and scribbles were more interesting, so I flipped it and glued that side down.

### Keep swapping until it works

The strawberry on the right didn’t feel as free and easy as the other two, so I grabbed another piece of collage paper. That’s the beauty of collage: you can keep doing this until it feels right.

I ended up with two strawberries on one piece of paper and a larger third one on a different paper with different markings. Then I tied the yellow back in with the lemons.

### Keep it simple

The simplicity of this piece is what makes it interesting. You don’t need strong drawing skills. It’s about the process, working intuitively, and using collage paper and handmade drawings, which bring authenticity to the work.

Wipe off the area or glue a new piece of collage paper over it. You get a fresh start without redoing the whole painting.

**What paper works for a collage painting?**
Old drawings, scrap paper, and handmade collage paper all work. Glue them to heavy paper like 140 lb cold press.

**Can I paint acrylic over collage paper?**
Yes. Without white mixed in, thinner acrylic lets the layers underneath show through.

**How do I know when to stop?**
When the shapes read clearly and extra marks start fighting each other. If you overdo it, swap in new paper.
