Expressive Football Paintings: Original NFL and American Football Art

I’m Robert Joyner, a full-time artist who paints football the way it feels: loud, fast, and a little chaotic. These are loose, expressive originals in watercolor, acrylic, and mixed media, built around the energy, grit, and motion of the game.

Why I paint football

I played rec ball growing up and loved it. Then I tried out in high school and quickly realized I was too scrawny. These guys were grown men, and Hampton High won state just about every year. Put me in rural Virginia and I would’ve crushed it. Tight spirals all day long. (Okay, maybe not.)

So I paint it instead. I never got to be on the field, but I can still get in the middle of the action.

Each piece is made with spontaneity and movement in mind. Watercolor on paper, acrylic on canvas, and mixed media, with quarterbacks launching a pass, linemen colliding at the line, and receivers making impossible catches.

I’m not after photographic realism. I want the emotion and the explosive feel of the game, through gestural brushwork and bold color.
