You don't need complicated techniques or a mountain of details to create an expressive acrylic landscape. A few well-organized shapes, strong values, and some confident brushwork can do the trick.

In this beginner-friendly acrylic painting lesson, I'll show you how to build a simple landscape using a dominant dark composition, a subtle pathway, and a dramatic gray sky.

## Start With a Simple Composition

Before touching the paint, I planned the major shapes. The design relies on a dominant dark, with a narrow pathway leading the viewer toward a lighter area near the horizon.

Keeping the composition simple allows us to focus on the important stuff: value relationships, color harmony, and creating depth.

### Build Color and Contrast

I started with an orange-toned surface, then blocked in the landscape using cool grays, dark greens, and touches of brighter color.

The orange peeking through the finished painting helps tie everything together. It's a simple trick that creates warmth and unity without adding unnecessary details.

One important beginner tip: **Acrylic paint often dries darker than it looks when wet.** Keep that in mind when judging your values.

### Keep the Brushwork Loose

Once the major shapes were established, I added distant trees, subtle variations in the darks, and a few lighter accents.

Rather than painting every leaf, blade of grass, or cloud, I focused on suggesting the landscape with expressive marks.

**The takeaway:** Strong composition and value relationships do the heavy lifting. Get those working first, and you won't need to fuss over every little detail.
